Why not a Nokia Droid?

Nokia just announced that it has sold over a million Lumia phones. Good for Nokia. However, I still don’t understand why Nokia would commit exclusively to Microsoft when it can also be making Android phones. That is, if you decided that it is not worth owning the software risk, then why not completely outsource the software risk and focus entirely on the hardware. Whether Windows wins or Android, you would be covered. Under the current strategy, one has just changed the software risk from Symbian risk to Windows mobile risk. While I think it was a good decision to go away from Symbian, it’s not clear it was the best decision to not add Android to the mix.

I totally agree with you, mate. Nokia has made some very nice phones over the years. Other manufacturers are making phones with different OS (Samsung – Android, Windows Phone, Bada, “Feature Phones” and soon their own Linux implementation). Nokia needs a broad market. Windows Phone is nice, but not mature enough yet (limited range of hardware support). The final “Symbian” device (Nokia 803) sounds great on paper, but will be running a defunct OS. They have some strange strategies (like releasing a MeeGo device and dropping the OS). I guess Nokia liked the big pile of cash Microsoft handed them.

I’m pretty sure Nokia know exactly what they are doing. The thing is, you only know what they want you to know, who knows what goes on behind closed doors, only they do.

My opinion about Nokia with the operating system of Google.. It should be an very nice combo. Nokia has high-quality smartphones and Android, I have an Samsung Galaxy S2, is very confortable, fast and easy to use!
