Friday, April 15: 12.00-1.00 pm
Tuesday, April 26: 12.00-1.30 pm

Agenda: Online Video

In the last couple of sessions, we discussed cloud computing followed by the Internet Advertising industry. In today’s session, we will wrap up our discussion of sponsored search and then move on to online videos.

We will discuss both the distribution and production side of the business. In terms of distribution, we will begin with a discussion of Hulu. Hulu represents a rare case of incumbents coming up with something truly disruptive. We will then move to the production side and talk about whether the Internet warrants new models for media production.

Session 02: Jan 18

In the last class, we discussed the Internet industry structure. I motivated the role of tier 1 ISPs (backbone providers) as wholesale providers of bandwidth and tier 2/3 ISPs as retailers of bandwidth. We talked about the bottlenecks on the Internet and the content provider’s motivation for locating content as close as possible to the edge of the network. CDNs like Akamai and Limelight play a major role in facilitating edge delivery. We also discussed P2P media delivery.

The next lecture will mainly focus on wireless technologies. We will begin with technology basics (2g/3g cellular and discuss emerging wireless broadband solutions). We will also begin our discussion of mobile apps.
