Technology policy and ethics

My undergraduate degrees in political science and symbolic systems and my master's degree in technology policy reflect both an interest in information and communication technologies and the belief that technology is neither conceived nor applied in a vacuum.

·         Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs:  Participants are committed to the idea that scientists have a responsibility to consider the possible unintended consequences of scientific and technological developments.

·         Student Pugwash:  I was a summer intern for the student affiliate of the Pugwash Conferences.

·         Computer Systems Policy Project:  Now known as the Technology CEO Council, this is the information technology industry's voice on public policy issues including health care, digital media convergence, security, privacy, etc.

·         Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility:  This group debates the social impact of information and communications technology, attempting to educate decision-makers on the capabilities and limitations of computing in society.

Local community

·        City Church Philadelphia:  My wife and I both attend and are active in City Church Philadelphia in West Philadelphia.

·         University City Hospitality Coalition:  Since 2002, I have served on the Board of Directors and (for the most part) volunteer once-per-week washing dishes, cooking, etc. for this ecumenical group of volunteers that serves the West Philadelphia poor and homeless communities.

Everything else

·         Ultimate Frisbee:  I learned to play as an undergraduate at Stanford and though I am not very good, I played on the men's intercollegiate B-team (only b/c no one gets cut from the B-team).  I have since played at MIT and in community leagues: BUDA, DiscNW, WAFC, and PADA.

·         Running:  I started running originally to train for ultimate, but found that I liked running even when I was not chasing a flying plastic disc.  Now, most of my running is to train for distance relays with the MIT Ashdown House Harriers.

·         Swimming/Cycling:  Depending upon the season, I swim and cycle several times per week for cross-training.  For swimming, a book by Total Immersion has improved my technique significantly.
